Driving In A Foreign Country - What You Need To Know

Exploring the world behind the wheel is an adventure like no other! Whether you are navigating winding roads in the Swiss Alps or cruising along the coastal highways of Australia, driving in a foreign country offers unforgettable experiences and breathtaking views that you wouldn’t get with a large group.

However, before you hit the road, it's essential to know the rules of driving internationally.  Did you know that some countries require you to obtain a permit to drive on their roads? From bustling cities to remote countryside, each destination has its own set of regulations. This could range from IDP (International Drivers Permit) to an IDL (International Driver’s License).

Some countries do not recognize a drivers license from the United States, but officially recognize an IDP. (An international driving permit). There are other countries that honor a United States drivers license, but require a local language translation. An IDP translates your U.S. license information into 10 different languages and contains your name, driver information and photo. It's a valid form of identification in over 150 countries. An IDP is not a substitute for your government or state-issued driver's license. And it can't replace a suspended or revoked U.S. driver's license. You will still need a valid U.S. driver's license to drive both in the U.S. and in a foreign country. If you have a U.S. driver's license, learn how you can get an IDP from the American Automobile Association (AAA).

How to Apply for a IDP?
